Envelope Calligraphy - Copperplate & Modern Script by Suzanne Cunningham

Brief Summary

Suzanne Cunningham demonstrates addressing wedding envelopes using two distinct calligraphy styles: flourished Copperplate and modern script. She shares tips on nib and ink selection, letter spacing, and achieving a balanced layout. The Copperplate section highlights the use of a Leonard EF Principal nib and Law Ink, while the modern script section features Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White ink and an Eco G nib.

  • Copperplate script is characterized by its fine hairlines and swells, requiring precision and careful execution.
  • Modern script offers more freedom and speed, with variations in letter height and baseline alignment.

Intro

Suzanne Cunningham introduces the demonstration of addressing wedding envelopes in two calligraphy styles: flourished Copperplate and modern script. She mentions that this is her everyday job. She will share tips and techniques for each style.

Copperplate Script Envelope

Suzanne uses a Leonard EF Principal nib, which she favors for its fineness and flexibility, creating hairlines and swells. She uses Law Ink for its smooth flow. When writing repeated letters, she intentionally varies them. She adds a flourish to the address. She creates a dramatic cross on the "t". She shares her method for writing the zip code, which involves writing the left, middle, and right numbers first to ensure perfect centering with the city and state. She may add ink to the J if she doesn't like the way it looks. She adds a terminal to the C.

Modern Script Envelope

Suzanne switches to a white ink, Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White, diluted for better flow, and an Eco G nib. She uses a modern script, which is more free-flowing. This script is faster to execute than Copperplate because it doesn't require the same level of precision. The letters don't need to hit the baseline every time.

0:00 hey guys i'm suzanne cunningham and what i would like to do with you today is to address two wedding envelopes this is what I do all day most every day and I wanted to share with you a few little tips and how I go about doing this the first envelope is going to be in a flourished copperplate script and the next envelope is going to be in a modern script so let's get started and so we're going to begin first with the copper plate this is a Leonard EF principle nib which is one of my favorite nibs it's very fine and very flexible it makes a pretty hairline and a pretty swell

0:51 you're going to hear it a little bit more than you would like an eco ji or a zebra ji because it's so pointy and I'm using law Inc today because it's really pretty and it flows off the nail really well I

1:59 don't use walnut ink for reproduction work it's great for practicing and anytime I write two letters side by side they're the same letter like for here we have a Double L I try to make them different on purpose because it's very hard to write two identical letters side by side this way I can add a little extra flourish right there and that's pretty

2:51 clean it up right there

4:50 let's have a really big dramatic cross right there on my tee and kind of fill in that space a little bit

7:58 this is the way I normally do my zip code it seems kind of unusual but it works for me and I have always done it this way I do the left number and in the middle and the right and then I go back and fill in and that helps me to get it perfectly centered with my city and state you okay so there we have a flourished copper plate and sometimes I may go back and see where I have

8:51 come behind the J right here if I don't like the way that looks in the end I might come back and fill this in I don't know it just depends just depends on how how I think it looks in the very end so I don't know I may like that better okay so that is a copper plate version I wanted I see one thing we missed right here I need to come back and put my terminal right there on my C okay so the next time flip I'm going to do we're going to use a a white ink and I prefer dr. pH Martin's bleed proof white and I have diluted a little bit to thin it out and so it's going to go on my nib

9:41 better and I'm also changing nibs is time to an eco gene you have better luck with a bleak proof white when I use the Neko G and this is going to be in a modern script or more free script you as you can see this one goes a lot faster and that's the cause it's not so completely exact as the copper plate so you can go faster you don't want the letters

10:46 hitting the baseline every single time you want some to be a little bit above up above it and some a little bit below so we can go a little bit quicker that's nice

11:31 and you may can tell that this nib is a little bit more quiet than the one I just used

13:03 you okay so there's the modern envelope okay that's it thanks for watching guys and I hope you had fun I had a good time flourishing with you today and doing a little bit of modern script today and just remember to follow me on instagram suzanne cunningham and also calligraphy masters on instagram thanks a bunch have a great day
