First Impressions of Ukraine

In 2015, Ellie visited Ukraine for the first time, travelling by plane to Poland and then enduring a long, uncomfortable bus journey to Tennoped. The trip was hot, the roads were bumpy, and the overall experience was unpleasant, leading her to believe it would be her only visit. However, upon arriving, she was captivated by the amazing people and delicious food, particularly enjoying borsch served in a bread basket and trying salo for the first time. This experience completely changed her perspective, and after just three days, she decided that she wanted to live in Ukraine.

Decision to Move to Ukraine

Two years later, Ellie got engaged to her Ukrainian husband, whom she met while working in Norway. They faced a choice: move back to England, where Ellie could easily find work, stay in Norway, where her husband had a company, or move to Ukraine and start from scratch. Despite the uncertainty, they chose Ukraine, driven by her husband's family ties and a desire for a fresh start. Ellie does not regret this decision, describing it as an amazing journey filled with both ups and downs, including the challenges of war.

So, I've been po posting on social media quite a lot over the past year and a half, two years, but I've never actually shared my full story of how and why I moved to grain, which was back in 2018 is when I moved. So, I'm going to share it with you now. If you're interested in learning more, have any questions, add a comment, like, don't forget to subscribe. So, um, it all started back in, I think it was 2015. It was the first time I visited Ukraine and we took a plane to Poland and then we drove in like a really old bus. Um, we drove to into Ukraine. Um,

0:48 we were visiting the city of Tennoped and it was I can't remember how many hours. Was it many hours? seven, nine, 10 hours, I don't know, bus journey. It felt like a long time at least. Um, and and it was really hot. There was no air conditioning. The roads Yeah. back in 2015 were really bad. It was like super bumpy roads and it was it we drove through the night. It was just a really not fun experience. And I thought while I was driving there, this is going to be my first and last visit to Ukraine. I don't want to come back here. Um, but then when we arrived at our destination, I met some amazing people. We ate amazing food. We ate at this restaurant

1:34 in Tanopa, which is I think it's kind of like for tourists, but it's like this really like old like traditional like food they make. Um, I had this borch in like a bread basket. It was the first time I tasted sala and it was I was sold by that moment on. I was sold. The food was so good. Um and I just it was just a really amazing experience and by the time it was like I was there for 3 days I think and by the time I left I was like you know what I think I want to live here. So it definitely after experiencing it myself and just being here for a few days um I absolutely fell in love with the country almost

2:20 immediately. Uh fast forward 2 years I met is when we I got engaged to my husband who is Ukrainian. Um and then we decided to live in Ukraine. We decided to move to Ukraine when we were engaged. Um we had our wedding here. Um, and we've lived here ever since. So, we started living here permanently in 2018. Um, so obviously the reason I'm now permanently permanently living in Ukraine is because mostly because of my husband is Ukrainian. But we decided, we had a choice. We actually met my husband when I was working in Norway. He was also working in Norway. So, we could have decided to move back to England where I could easily get a pretty good job in Norway. He had his own company.

3:05 So, we could have stayed there. Um, and I'd also been working there, so I could also have found more work if I needed or we decided to move back to Ukraine and start from nothing. Um, obviously my husband has his family here, but he didn't have any businesses going or a job or anything. Um, and we decided to go back to Ukraine. Um, and start from nothing. And it was a really I I don't regret it for one second. It's been an amazing journey. um a lot of ups and downs obviously the war being a big part a big period of the time we've been here um but it's the more the longer I stay in Ukraine I've now been here for 7 years I still feel like I'm I I get a greater respect for the

3:53 country I get a greater love for its people I get a greater like um like I just want to give back to this country. I kind of came here with the impression or the thought, which is completely not true, but I kind of thought Ukraine was would be like a second kind of a second world country. Like I'm from England, moving to Ukraine. Um, and maybe I can help like teach people or show people like a better way to live, but it's been the complete opposite. Ukraine has taught me so much. Um, it's taught me how I enjoy life a lot more. I'm healthier. like just the lifestyle has made me healthier I think. Um and I'm definitely a happier person

4:39 for living here. So absolutely love it. If you want to hear more about my experiences in Ukraine, just follow, subscribe.
