BARGUE DRAWINGS | What and Why?

Brief Summary

This video discusses the Charles Bargue drawing course, specifically the lithograph copies used in the 19th century and at the Ravenswood Atelier. It highlights the importance of precision in these copies, aiming for exact replication of shapes, lines, and values to train the eye and hand. While the course can be studied independently, the video emphasises the value of learning under a teacher for effective critique and correction. Despite the challenging and sometimes tedious nature of Bargue drawings, the video stresses the significant improvement and heightened visual sensitivity gained through this practice.

  • Bargue copies are about training your eye to be precise.
  • Doing it under a teacher is important because you're really going to learn is through the critiques.
  • The amount of improvement in such a short amount of time was really drastic.

Introduction to Charles Bargue Drawing Course

Charles Bargue created a drawing course featuring lithographs for students to copy in the 19th century. At institutions like the Ravenswood Atelier, first-year students create Bargue copies. The purpose of these copies is to train the eye for precision.

The Process and Importance of Precision

The process involves copying a Bargue lithograph onto a fresh sheet of paper, aiming for an exact replica in size and appearance. Precision is key, focusing on replicating shapes, line qualities, transitions, and values while controlling hand and arm movements. Initially, hand-eye coordination can be challenging.

Learning with a Teacher and the Value of Critiques

While the Bargue drawing course book is available for independent study, learning under a teacher is recommended for the full benefits. Critiques from a teacher are crucial for identifying and correcting proportional mistakes, aiding in the development of a sensitive eye.

Challenges and Benefits of Bargue Drawings

Bargue drawings are challenging and can be tedious, requiring focus, attentiveness, and self-criticism. Despite these challenges, the improvement achieved in a short time is significant, leading to heightened visual sensitivity. The video recommends finding a teacher for Bargue copies, emphasising that the payoff is substantial despite the difficulty.

0:00 so Charles bar made this drawing course and he made all of these lithographs for students to copy from in the 19th century and at the Ravenswood Attell the first year students they do bar copies and I know a lot of other atillas do the same thing and here are some examples of bar copies and these are the ones that I did my first year and the bar copies they're all about training your eye to be really really precise so the process of doing them is you have um the copy of a bar lithograph and then you take a fresh sheet of paper right next next to it and you copy the image to be as exact as possible and it's really best to work sight sides on this so your drawing should be the exact same size and then and um look the exact same as the original bar and like I said it's really

0:45 all about Precision so um you're trying to get the exact same shapes the exact same line qualities Transitions and values and also learning how to control your hand and arm to be doing what you want it to do I remember when I first started out just the hand eyee coordination was really challenging just to get it really precise and I know you can go out on Amazon and get the bar drawing course book and do it on your own and while I think um really any drawing practice you're just going to get better at drawing the more that you draw but to really get the full benefits from bark it um it's really important to be doing it under a teacher because what you're really going to learn is through the critiques cuz as you're developing your eye to be really sensitive um the teacher should be showing you in critique CRI like the proportional

1:31 mistakes and things like that for you to correct and fix and so um it's really in the critiques that you're going to be learning a lot and bark drawings they're are really challenging um and they can be tedious cuz sometimes it feels like you could just be working on it forever and just be forever correcting and making things more and more accurate and it also takes a lot of even just building up endurance to be able to stay um really focused and attentive and just be um really critical of yourself and I really enjoyed doing my bark drawings um but to be honest by the end of it I was really excited to just say goodbye to bark and um move on to castres and it's kind of a bit like taking your medicine because while they can be really tedious um for me just the amount of improvement in such a short amount of time was

2:17 really drastic and it's really almost like developing a superpower cuz it's really incredible um how extremely sensitive you can really make your eye and so I really recommend finding a teacher to do bark copies and while they are really challenging and sometimes not always the most fun thing to do the payoff is huge
