Characters Introduction

The play begins with Duke Senior, the rightful ruler, who is usurped by his brother, Duke Frederick. Duke Senior is banished to the Forest of Arden, accompanied by loyal lords. Duke Senior's daughter, Rosalind, remains in the kingdom with Celia, Duke Frederick's daughter, due to their close friendship. Meanwhile, Sir Roland de Bois, a friend of Duke Senior, has two sons: Oliver and Orlando. After Sir Roland's death, Oliver mistreats Orlando, denying him education and a proper upbringing, despite their father's wishes.

Orlando vs Charles

Oliver, envious of Orlando, arranges for him to fight Charles, a skilled wrestler, hoping Charles will injure or kill him. Charles is hesitant to harm Orlando due to his noble status, but Orlando defeats him. Rosalind and Celia witness the fight, and Rosalind and Orlando fall in love at first sight.

Rosalind and Celia are banished

Duke Frederick suddenly banishes Rosalind from the kingdom. Celia, unwilling to be separated from her, decides to flee with her to the Forest of Arden. They are accompanied by Touchstone, a court jester. Simultaneously, Oliver plots to kill Orlando. Adam, a loyal servant, warns Orlando, who then flees to the Forest of Arden, unaware that Rosalind is also heading there.

Forest of Arden

To travel safely, Rosalind disguises herself as a man named Ganymede, and Celia disguises herself as a shepherdess named Aliena. In the forest, they encounter various characters, including Audrey, a country girl, and Phoebe and Silvius, involved in a complicated love triangle where Silvius loves Phoebe, but Phoebe does not reciprocate. Duke Frederick conspires with Oliver to seize Orlando's lands and plans to attack Duke Senior in the Forest of Arden.

Love and Disguise

Orlando, now in the forest, meets Ganymede (Rosalind in disguise) and confides in him about his love for Rosalind. Ganymede proposes a game where Orlando can practice his wooing by pretending Ganymede is Rosalind. Orlando agrees and begins to visit Ganymede daily, expressing his love. Oliver also arrives in the forest, seeking to harm Orlando, but is saved by Orlando from a lioness. This act of bravery causes Oliver to repent and reconcile with Orlando. Oliver meets Aliena (Celia in disguise) and they fall in love.

Resolutions

Rosalind, sensing Orlando's growing weariness with their game, arranges for everyone to meet the next day. She promises to resolve their romantic entanglements. Rosalind, still disguised as Ganymede, manipulates Phoebe into promising to marry Silvius if she cannot marry Ganymede. She secures similar promises from Orlando and Oliver regarding Rosalind and Aliena, respectively. Rosalind and Celia then reveal their true identities, bringing about a series of marriages: Orlando marries Rosalind, Oliver marries Celia, and Phoebe agrees to marry Silvius. Duke Senior approves of all the marriages.

Happy Ending

News arrives that Duke Frederick has abandoned his plans to attack Duke Senior after encountering a religious man in the forest who convinced him to seek a life of religious devotion. Duke Frederick restores the dukedom to Duke Senior. With all conflicts resolved, the play concludes with a celebration of the multiple marriages and the restoration of order and justice.
